In 2009 I visited a model warship exhibition at the Explosions Museum in Gosport. One of the models I was admiring was a model of HMS Kent and wishing that I could have a model of HMS Glamorgan, one of the three DLG's that I served on during my time in the Royal Navy and my favourite ship out of the three. I got talking to a gentleman who was exhibiting a WW2 battleship, the detail of which was absolutely superb. I told him that I loved the model of HMS Kent on display behind us and told him that I served on three ships of the County Class and would love a model of one but did not think my skills were up to building one. There is a saying 'being in the right place at the right time', and to cut a long story short he had built a model of HMS Norfolk in 1975, one of his first projects. He needed to make room for his latest projects and offered me HMS Norfolk on the spot. I acquired the model shortly after our conversation and at first considered keeping the model as the Norfolk, but decided that as I spent a longer period of time on HMS Glamorgan, and she was such a special ship to me that I would convert her to as she was just prior to the Falklands. Some of the conversion I have done myself but I also had a lot of help from the gentleman I purchased her from. Geoff Young is a superb model builder and I will be forever in his debt and I am very grateful to him for everything that he has done, and in helping me to achieve my ambition of having a model of HMS Glamorgan. The model is 1/84 scale which is quite unusual but it does mean that the model is 6ft long. She was remote controlled but has now entered retirement and is now for display purposes only. I am having a display case built for her but this is a long term project. The convertion is now complete and I think she looks superb, I hope you will feel the same way. This model was first constructed without the benefit of plans, just photographs, so the accuracy is astounding. The eagle eyed among you may spot some things that are not quite right but again the model was constructed without the aid of plans, just photos. The pictures in the album below will give you an idea of how much work has gone into the model since her purchase in 2009.

HMS GLAMORGAN FIRST COMMISSION CREW PHOTOS 1966 - 1969

KIM WHITE GALLERY
Below are some pictures that Kim from Australia kindly donated of his recently built model of HMS Glamorgan. This depicts the Glamorgan as she looked when first commissioned back in 1966 so you can make comparisons between my model and this. Kim has recently sold this model and is about to commence building an improved version of Glamorgan based on her earlier years. I am sure you will be as impressed with Kim's model as I am.
